21.11.22 - Community Planting Day

On 21 November, we organised a Community Planting Day in Esher High St. to restore the various planters located on the footpaths, which had been neglected for some time, with lots of beautiful autumn and winter plants. We’re most grateful for financial and technical support from Healix Garsons with this project and to the many Esher folk (and two groups of schoolchildren with their teachers) who turned out on the day to help with the weeding and planting. Volunteers from numerous local businesses rolled their sleeves up, including enthusiastic part-time gardeners from Killik, Savills, Sandown Park, Giro, Healix and Audley Chaucer. Our local MP, Dominic Raab, also put in a shift. It was a great local occasion with an inspirational community spirit very much in evidence. We intend to do something similar again because this planting project is just the start! Future projects include restoring the various planters separating the slip roads from the main road (outside Pizza Express and, on the opposite side, outside the main shopping parade) and those outside Giro, Don Luis and Bernard as well as a major project to show the town off at its best in time for the forthcoming Coronation.

Lucy Roshier, lives locally and works at the Killik & Co branch in Esher in Marketing and Community Engagement. Working for a business on the High Street Lucy is keen to improve Esher’s look not just for those who work and live here but to help make Esher a place more people will want to come and visit. With two young daughters Lucy is also keen to encourage more young people to get involved in the initiatives started by Esher in Bloom and create areas where they can enjoy being outside and have spaces to unwind and be proud of.

Roger McCormick, has lived in Esher since 1976. After a long career as a partner in a City law firm he has had a mix of activities, including roles at London School of Economics and Bayes Business School. For some years, he has been a non-executive director of a company in the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking group. He also hosts various music shows on Brooklands Radio.

Amanda Manship, has lived in Esher since 2003, and has enjoyed volunteering in the Esher community since 2010. She’s helped set up a Foodbank, gardening and cooking projects, as well as running a fruit and veg business! She first approached the Chamber of Commerce early in 2022 with the idea of Esher in Bloom and enlisted the help of Roger, Lucy and Councillor Steve Bax who form the committee of Esher in Bloom and are the driving force bringing change to our High Street. Having worked in a school for 6 years she is passionate about engaging young people with the project, and organised a planting day with Esher High School and Cranmere Primary School pupils. It was a fantastic day where the pupils worked with businesses to create amazing planting, that the schools will continue to maintain as part of their curriculum.
